The Stood-up Drop part II: Capturing adhesion

Using dewetting as a strong indicator for the quality of adhesive bonds

If you want to capture adhesion, you usually do so by measuring the force required to separate a connection. The similarity to a dewetting process, in which two phases also separate, is striking. Right now we are following this approach to find out more about the basic relationship between dewetting and adhesion. That there is such a relationship has become evident from many experiments we made.

This 2nd part of our three-part webinar series focuses on the benefits of the Stood-up Drop for your material testing – as a new routine in your QC and R&D for adhesive bonds or as a prescreening method to reduce the number of more time-consuming testings.

What we are discussing

We will briefly recap the learnings from part I about wetting and dewetting, their difference, and the Stood-up Drop as a quick and easy way to measure the relevant recently receded contact angle.

We will then focus on the meaning of dewetting for adhesion and present several use cases where the Stood-up Drop showed good correlation to adhesive bonding performance and compare the results with other common test methods.

What know-how you will gain

  • Why does the recently receded contact angle (RRCA) tell you when you have to expect poor adhesive performance?

  • With which parameters of adhesion testing does dewetting frequently correlate and how can these be complemented or even replaced?

  • How can you find out whether such correlation applies in your individual task?
