Coatings: Interfacial Analysis for the Perfect Surface
Optimizing substrates and liquid coating products with surface science
Interfacial analyses for development and QC at every stage of the coating process
Coatings can do much more than just beautify or protect: they can complement or even define the possible applications of a material and sometimes transform the substrate into a mere carrier. And the more demanding the coating task, the more important it is to understand the liquid and solid surfaces involved. Learn how to optimally prepare the substrate and specifically adapt the coating formulation to achieve perfect results.
Are your adhesion tests only scratching the surface?
Mechanical adhesion tests such as the crosshatch test according to ISO 2409 play an important role in the quality control of coatings – too important, in fact, considering the time and effort involved. What if you could significantly reduce the scope of such tests?
Our Stood-up Drop® method measures the dewetting behavior of the substrate in seconds and non-destructively, delivering results that correlate very well with the ratings of crosshatch tests. Some of our customers are already using the new method for quick screenings, leading to a significant reduction of mechanical tests. Surface activation control: When inks produce a blurred image
Poor wetting and adhesion despite passing the ink test after activation: this is an experience that brings many customers to us—if not for the outdated, analog working method and the dependence of the results on the experience of the tester.
When it comes to activation control, contact angle measurements are the reliable and user-independent alternative. They provide result parameters that directly indicate the degree of activation and also detect overactivation, an often overlooked cause of adhesion defects. Thanks to modern, mobile measuring instruments with one-click technology, contact angle measurements are even faster than ink tests.

Methods relating to liquid coating products
If you use or even manufacture liquid coatings, then you are surely aware that surface tension has a significant effect on wetting and is an important test criterion. KRÜSS tensiometers have therefore been part of laboratory equipment in this industry for decades.
But did you know, for example, that surface tension is time-dependent and can initially be much too high in a spraying process, even though the value measured at rest was acceptable? Read our use case to find out which standard and complementary methods you can use to comprehensively analyze your coating materials and prepare them specifically for the substrate and the conditions of the coating application.

Multilayer systems: After coating is before coating
Many coatings are multilayer systems in which, for example, primers, colored lacquers, and sealing finishes are applied one after the other. The quality and long-term stability of the entire system depend on each individual step.
Interfacial analysis methods can be used to evaluate and optimize the compatibility between the substrate and the various layers in both their liquid and cured states. In our application report Predicting coatability on a study conducted in collaboration with BYK, you can learn how such optimization can be achieved.

Foam as a disruptive factor: How to keep it off your coating
Wetting and dispersing agents are part of the formulation of most coatings, but they have an extremely undesirable side effect: some of them are very effective foam formers. And foam leads to defects in the coated surface, disrupts the entire coating process, and must therefore be prevented. In our webinar Beyond the Bubbles, you will learn how to detect foam formation early on and effectively prevent it with reliable analyses.
